Fashion collaborations can be one of the most exciting things and boy have we seen a lot over the last eighteen months or sp – Daryl K X Madewell, Rodarte X & Other Stories, Christopher Kane X Crocs, A$AP Rocky X Guess, Alexandra Wang X Adidas Originals, Canada Goose and, well, everyone, just to name a few.
We may be swimming in them but collabs are certainly not going out of style anytime soon and that is a good thing because these meetings of the most stylish minds often bring fresh takes. Making something dynamic together is the name of the game and the latest M.I.A X Astrid Andersen collab is a winner.
It is universally agreed that politically charged musician M.I.A always seems to be quite a few steps ahead with her unique style. In the past, she has worked with Versace (2013) and modeled for some top labels. So, when she recently decided to get into music merch ahead of her world tour this Autumn and gave Danish-born, London-based maven of street-wear inspired fashion, Astrid Andersen, a ring, of course, it resulted in one hell of a covetable collection.
The collection includes include orange and black anoraks, track pants, and tees. The anoraks are made from 100% recycled plastic and produced by Parley for the Oceans, a sustainability-minded organization that recently started working with Stella McCartney.
This edgie, utilitarian and unsurprisingly bold collab fits with the rest of Astrid’s hip-hop inspired Spring Summer 2017 collection and was reworked to include design elements from M.I.A’s last album AIM. The pieces would work as protection from the Autumn rain but equally, could be worn to a club because they are so light. Practicality and functionality meet high fashion and futurism – it is so great when two worlds come together and collaborate. It’s available here.
