A life guide from Rhoald Dahl

A life guide from Rhoald Dahl

It is impossible to think about childhood without recalling the magic of Rhoald Dahl. Even his name is a treat that roles off the tongue and is fun to say. He is the master of the children’s book; the page master who sparks young imaginations and provokes fits of giggles and eye scrunches in adults and kids alike.

I am currently writing a children’s book and, of course, Rhoald Dhal is forever in the back of my mind, having set the benchmark (unreachably high) for the genre; he is the emperor of his magical, fantastical kingdom.

In everyday life, the magic of Rhoald Dahl will never stop comforting and teaching us something because amongst the silly mayhem he always wrote such sense.

When modern times get hard and you need some wise words, remember Rhoald Dhal always gets us no matter what the situation may be.

Here are a few examples…

When somebody sends you a pic from a party of you gurning at the camera whilst sporting fat arm;

It doesn’t matter who you are or what you look like, so long as somebody loves you.”

The Witches

When you’ve somehow got involved in a Twitter outrage spiral;

I understand what you’re saying, and your comments are valuable, but I’m gonna ignore your advice.”

Fantastic Mr Fox

When you’ve been watching Netflix for seven hours straight;

Oh, books, what books they used to know, Those children living long ago! So please, oh please, we beg, we pray, Go throw your TV set away, And in its place you can install a lovely bookshelf on the wall.”

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory

When you move to the city for the first time;

Well, maybe it started that way. As a dream, but doesn’t everything. Those buildings. These lights. This whole city. Somebody had to dream about it first. And maybe that is what I did. I dreamed about coming here, but then I did it.”

James and the Giant Peach

When you have been looking at selfies on Instagram for too long;

You can fake a mouth-smile any time you want, simply by moving your lips. I’ve also learned that a real mouth-smile always has an eye-smile to go with it. So watch out, I say, when someone smiles at you but his eyes stay the same. It’s sure to be a phony.”

Danny the Champion of the World

When you start to take yourself far too seriously;

A little nonsense now and then, is relished by the wisest man.”

Charlie and the Glass Elevator

When you’re getting trolled;

Don’t gobblefunk around with words,”

Grown ups are complicated creatures, full of quirks and secrets”

When you’ve watched too much Black Mirror;

And don’t worry about the bits you can’t understand. Sit back and let the words wash around you, like music”

When choosing a new FB profile pic;

I think I have this thing where everybody has to think I’m the greatest. And if they aren’t completely knocked out and dazzled and slightly intimidated by me, I don’t feel good about myself.”

Fantastic Mr Fox

Whilst watching election coverage;

Having power is not nearly as important as what you choose to do with it”

If you’re trying to decide whether to treat yourself to those new shoes;

Mr Wonka: ‘Don’t forget what happened to the man who suddenly got everything he wanted.’

Charlie Bucket: ‘What happened?’

Mr Wonka: ‘He lived happily ever after.’”

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory

When trying to decide on a Halloween costume;

Never do anything by halves if you want to get away with it. Be outrageous. Go the whole hog”.

His wise words will stay with us forever.
